Global Studies Programme – December 2020

As members of Round Square, our students are given many opportunities to connect and work with students from all around the globe. Today’s students are the next generation of business, political and community leaders and, as a Round Square school, we feel our responsibility is to shape the way in which students understand, prepare for, and respond to the world’s challenges both now and in the future. More information with regards to Round Square can be found here: https://www.roundsquare.org/   We are looking forward to a collaboration with Felsted School, Essex who are running another online 5 day online Global Studies programme from Thursday 17th to Tuesday 22nd December2020.  Six students from AKS have signed up to join the Programme covering: Narcotics and Pharmaceuticals as Global Industries

Communication Skills – My Call to Action

Knowing I needed a focus for this half term, I decided to rank the 12 RS Discoveries in a hierarchy of importance from most important to least. Whilst I usually would advocate that all of the discoveries are equally as important as each other, I started to think about the context we find ourselves in, and right now more than ever how important communication is. The ability to communicate effectively felt almost superior and made me stop for a second and think about the last time I ‘checked in’ on how I communicate to others and how much power, we

Global Studies Virtual Learning Experience

The experience through the eyes of a student:   Today I received my certificate from Felsted School, to acknowledge that I completed the Global Studies virtual learning course online during the summer holidays. The course was one of the most enlightening and interesting experiences as we highlighted global issues and happenings, but with an international perspective as there were people attending the course from all over the world. After this very insular summer spent in lockdown, being able to connect with people all over the world with similar, yet wildly different experiences, was incredible. It allowed me to think of things with a global eye instead of what is happening

The Round Square IDEALS Challenge

The Pre-A Level course has given students the opportunity to have their thinking challenged by taking part in the Round Square IDEALS challenge with Leadership being the focus over the past 4 weeks. The big question being, what makes an effective leader in times of adversity? Students then had to complete a number of activities and reflective exercises independently.  This gave students a flavour of what is to come as part of their 6th Form studies; each one of the IDEALS will go ‘live’ each half term. Completion of all 6 of the IDEALS; International, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service will result in an official certificate

Celebrating Acts of Kindness

It has been a challenging and unusual few months for us all, but one where the AKS community spirit of support and togetherness is stronger than it has ever been. There have been so many of you who have gone above and beyond to make a difference to the lives of others. We want to celebrate and thank our wonderful, strong and caring community for all that is happening to support one another through these challenging times by producing a video with messages of thanks.  We would like to record as many ‘acts of kindness’ as possible and we would like as many

Self-Awareness, our Half-Term Focus

After looking at Compassion towards others last term, the Round Square focus for this half term is Self-Awareness. Miss De Miranda presented an assembly to launch it for students and staff and encourage them to think about what it means to them. She opened by explaining, “You need to take the time to be kind to yourself, often we pay more attention to negative events rather than positive ones that occur in our lives. It’s the bad things that grab our attention, stick in our memories, and influences our decisions. This can affect our behaviour, decisions, and even our relationships”. Miss De

Round Square Conference, India 2019 – our students’ reflections

As the term drew to a close, the Sixth Formers who attended the recent Round Square International Conference at Emerald Heights in India led an assembly to share their experiences and life lessons they gained with the school. J Jay (Year 12) opened the assembly by explaining, “You often hear the phrase ‘life changing’ in the same sentence as ‘round square conference’, and you might think this is an exaggeration, and so did we, until we went to India. We can now wholeheartedly tell you it is true”. Olivia continued, “I think now, only after having this time to reflect

Compassion – our half-term focus

Miss De Miranda opened her Round Square senior school assembly earlier this month to introduce this half-term’s focus on ‘Compassion’ by showing a video of Beyonce singing “I was Here” at the United Nations Congress, on Humanitarian Day back in 2012, noting that it “links perfectly into this half term’s RS Discovery – Compassion” Her assembly was based on two words COMPASSION and the act that shows compassion which is KINDNESS. This is an act that can be small or large but has the same impact on the person who receives it – an overwhelming sense that someone cares about

Lasting impact of the Round Square Conference 2018

To coincide with the 2019 Round Square Conference in India, Emily from Year 13 reflects on the lasting impact that last year’s conference in Canada had on her. It’s hard to believe that it’s almost been one year since myself and six other girls in the current Year 13 attended the incredible Round Square International Conference in Canada, and reflecting upon our experience, we realised that after being inspired by the thought provoking speakers, interesting people that we met and being pushed out of our comfort zone, we all returned from the trip filled with ideas on how we could
