‘My first year at AKS’

James, Jay and Holly at cookery club

James and Jay are coming to the end of their first year at AKS after joining us from Ansdell Primary School. Here’s what they had to say about their experiences. We’re delighted that they have enjoyed following their individual pathways and that they have settled in so well. They have contributed significantly to our school community and we look forward to following their continued success and adventures when they move into Year 8 in September. They will also be a great support for our new Year 7s who we will be welcoming next term.

James’ story:

When I started at AKS, I only knew a few people, so I felt a little anxious and scared. However, I made new friends quite quickly by getting involved in clubs and doing what I love especially playing sport and music. This helped me find people of a similar personality and likes.

AKS has given me many great opportunities to get involved which include music concerts like the Evening of Swing and the Summer Music Evening, plus numerous rugby, tennis, football and cricket matches against other schools. In addition, I have been able to go on various school trips such as the recent Year 7 residential to Ingleton and the Biology trip. Also, next year I am really looking forward to representing the school on the Barcelona Football Tour.

I have really enjoyed being involved in days where I have participated in speaker events and school sports day when I competed in the 800m, 1500m, shotput and javelin. This was the first time I had ever tried these events and loved doing something new!

The canteen at AKS is unbelievable. They have a great choice of different types of meals and the food is tasty. It is also a great place to catch up with friends outside of class.

I feel excited for my future time at AKS and am really excited about starting Year 8, especially now I know my way round and have a great group of friends.

Jay’s story:

My first year at AKS has been full of new experiences.  I came from Ansdell Primary School and I was nervous about whether I would make new friends and cope with life in Senior school.  Despite this, I was actually quite looking forward to joining AKS and I haven’t been disappointed.  I have joined the rugby team, attended conditioning club and tested my skills at cookery club (which is huge fun!).  I also recently joined concert band which is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to play with other musicians.  All of these things have helped me settle into life at AKS and build my confidence.  Alongside all this I have made many new friends across the whole year group.  We have just returned from the Geography residential which was fantastic fun as I like outdoor activities / adventure and it was my first time caving! It was also a great opportunity to spend time with friends.  As I have become more comfortable here I have started to come out of myself and am now looking forward to year 8.
